We’re trained to do it from a young age. Especially girls. And sometimes, it’s in our best interest – you wanted to say no and stay home, but you ended up having a great time and making cherished memories because you said yes. This is one of those things that can be so tricky to find the balance on. But sometimes, it’s not tricky at all; you know immediately that no is the best answer for you, but you end up saying yes. These are the times we need to put boundaries into place and honour them.

In my errant youth, I strayed into MLM waters briefly.

Though most of that is best forgotten, I’ve carried one idea with me ever since, because it serves me well sometimes.

When you ask someone for something, and they say no, you’re in the same place as you were before.

This isn’t always true – sometimes you really needed them to say yes, and now you don’t know what to do.

But most of the time, it’s not that critical. You’re not worse off for that no. You’re just the same as you were before you asked.

Remembering this – and knowing it’s true for the person asking, too – makes it easier for me to say no sometimes.

Going back to our prompt, unpick this for yourself.

Do you say yes when you want to say no?

Do you feel more comfortable letting other people’s needs and desires be more important than your own?

When did this serve you in your life?

Does it still?

Why and How to Use These Prompts

Getting into a better place in thinking about money is a vital first step to facing our numbers and then doing something to better them - all the stuff I'm here to help you with.

Use these prompts to gently explore your feelings about money at your own pace. Remember, the point is to dig beneath the surface for yourself.

Brew up a cuppa, put on some chill music, light a candle or incense, get a notebook and pen, and give it a go. Consider setting a timer for just 15 minutes and write whatever comes into your head.

For some prompts, you might prefer to meditate on them instead. Or ponder them whilst doing the washing up or walking the dog. Or you might want to talk them through with a trusted friend. Do whatever works for you to help you get to a better money mindset.
