It made me think about all the times we lie to ourselves…

Telling ourselves that we can do all sorts of work can lead to taking on work outside our zone of genius – which isn’t profitable.

Telling ourselves we don’t have time to do XYZ.

Telling ourselves that everything is terrible in our business.

Preparing a forecast of the proposed work will help you see in advance not to take it on. Or, if you’ve already done it, preparing a project report afterwards will help you realise you shouldn’t do it again.

Tracking your team’s time will help you see whether you’re truly running at capacity or not. And if you truly don’t have time for XYZ, and can’t see that you will have time in the foreseeable future, then you know it’s time to consider recruitment.

If you have a good handle on customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction, employee attendance (as a proxy for satisfaction), profit, and fulfilment timelines, then you can see in black and white that perhaps some areas could be improved, but others are actually doing well.
